How Early Money Beliefs Shape Our Financial Future

This past weekend, I visited the local breakfast cafe where they placed us next to an adorable little family, a mommy, a daddy and a sweet baby girl.

As I was eating, I looked to my left thinking she is so calm just minding her P’s and Q’s as her parents enjoyed their pancakes. Their table was very close to ours so I loved looking over to her, smiling back and forth and could see that she was a very content little girl when suddenly, her face lit up, and left arm reached out as her daddy pulled dollar bills from his wallet. She wanted to see what was in her daddy’s wallet. We all started to laugh and I said “That is hysterical, she lit up when you pulled money out of your wallet.” He replied, “She loves shoes too.” Her Mom said, “I don’t know where she gets it, I think he is in trouble, he has no idea what’s to come.”

I was quickly reminded of a master’s degree class in college called Psychology of Financial Planning where we explored our own money values, beliefs and behaviors originating between the ages of 6 mos and 7 years old. It was a deeply emotional class, with uplifting and depressing stories. This little girl was about just about 12 months old and perceived money as an important part of life showing up in her eyes as they lit up a the site of her Daddy’s wallet.

This is a shining example of how important it is to have financial wellness talks in the home environment, in the community and in the education system as soon as your children are able to understand how to talk. It is the difference between living a life filled with financial wellness or financial illness regarding the three money behaviors- spending, saving and investing.

I love my job as a financial wellness coach because there is always hope and the possibility of change for anyone seeking help regarding their own three money behaviors.

The coaching process will help you see that current behaviors correlate directly to childhood memories and what is preventing you from achieving Financial Peace of Mind.

Coaching you requires empathy and understanding on my part, pointing out how you arrived in the place you are today and helping you dig deeper into the layers of fear and apprehension to find the sources so you can move forward in life and feel comfortable about spending, saving and investing.
